Legislators Review Bill to Decriminalize Sex Work in New York

Legislators are reviewing a bill that would decriminalize sex work and eliminate prior criminal records. Under the bill, the legislation would make it legal to both sell and buy sex under specific circumstances. The legislation would also regulate the actual places where prostitution takes place, to regulate sex work and make working conditions for sex workers safer.

While the bill does decriminalize sex work and repeal many prostitution-related charges, prostitution in a school zone would remain a misdemeanor offense.

If passed, it would make New York the first state to fully decriminalize sex work.

This is the first statewide bill of its kind in the nation.
