44News This Morning Anchor Shelby Coates spoke with Wally Paynter from the Tri-State Alliance for World AIDs Day. December 1st is World AIDs Day, and events are taking place around the world and here in the tri-state. It draws attention to the status of the HIV/AIDs epidemic worldwide.
To observe World AIDs Day locally, there will be a memorial service being held Thursday, December 1st at 6 p.m. at St. Lucas United Church of Christ. There will be a reception immediately following the service. A collection will be taken to benefit the Tri-State Alliance AIDs Holiday Project. The group is working to sponsor more than 400 low-income households impacted by HIV/AIDS.

In the United State, about 44,000 people were diagnosed with the HIV infection in 2014. In 2013, an estimated 1.2 million people in the U.S. were living with HIV, 87% of whom were aware of their infection.
