The Department of Commerce has come down with its recommendations on the Section 232 investigation. It looked into the United States Dependency on foreign imports like aluminum and steel. Most of those materials including high purity aluminum are being imported for the Department of Defense.
The only remaining high purity smelter in America is the Century Aluminum Plant in Hawesville, Kentucky. In response to the investigation, the Department of Commerce recommends a 7.7 percent tariff on all aluminum imports and stricter tariffs on selected countries like China and Russia.
Century Aluminum CEO Mike Bless says he’s pleased with the findings. In a statement he says:
“We strongly support today’s release by the Department of Commerce of the Section 232 Aluminum Report. The report demonstrates this administration’s clear recognition that swift action is required to stop the surge of aluminum imports from destroying our industry. Aluminum is vital to our national security. Today we face a flood of imports—and that will only accelerate without immediate relief. We call on President Trump to act swiftly and boldly to save the American aluminum industry. We look forward to working with the administration to address this crisis.”
