A child is thriving after becoming only the second to undergo a risky fetal heart operation at children’s hospital of Philadelphia. Baby Juan and his parents have been camped out at the hospital since October.
When mom Cecelia was five months pregnant, and a routine ultrasound showed a mass on the baby’s heart. Their doctor in Uruguay sent the images to his friend, Doctor Jack Rychik at C-Hop. He diagnosed it as a rare Pericardial Teratoma.
The only hope was fetal surgery – operating on the baby’s heart inside the womb. The family raced to Philadelphia – the only place the operation had been done successfully, once before.
Juan is the second baby to survive this fetal surgery. The tumor did grow back so there was a second heart surgery. The baby survived with a big scar on his chest, but his long-term prognosis is unknown.
