Tom Watson, former Owensboro Mayor, is elected in the nonpartisan mayoral race. Watson will succeed current mayor Ron Payne who announced he would be stepping down earlier this year.
Watson served as Owensboro mayor prior to Payne’s administration. The mayor elect held 38% of the vote followed by pro-temp mayor Jeff Sandford who carried 32% of the vote.
Watson’s supporters were on tap at Fetta Pizza in downtown Owensboro for a watch party where there was a lot of celebration, “The team was just relentless in trying to get this thing to the end-zone, so I’m just proud I had so much help. I‘ve always said, public safety, sustained economic development, controlled spending and working toward a balanced budget that’s what every elected official should do.”
