A southwestern Indiana man convicted of rape and murder more than a quarter-century ago is set to be executed in Florida this week. The Florida Supreme Court has denied an appeal from a death row inmate Eric Scott Branch, who is orignally from Rockport, Indiana.
In 1993, he was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of Susan Morris, a University of West Florida student. He fled to Florida after being convicted in Vanderburgh County for the sexual battery and beating of a 14-year-old girl in 1991. Branch was mistakenly released early from the Vanderburgh County Community Correction Complex just days before the murder occurred in Panama City, Florida.
Branch appealed his death sentence claiming his brain development was that of someone under 18. However, the Florida Supreme Court denied his request.
Branch is set to be executed Thursday at 6 p.m. in Florida.
